Introduction
The story unfolds in Paris during the early days of the French Revolution in 1789. Étienne de Aignan, a young and disgraced nobleman, carries himself with the air of a libertine yet harbors a vague unease about the changing times. He is infatuated with Sébastien Moreau, the celebrated male lead of the Paris Opera, whose ethereal beauty and masterful performances have captivated audiences.
