"Silent Reading" is a long modern suspense novel written by Jinjiang author priest. It began serialization on Jinjiang Literature City on June 15, 2016, and concluded on January 8, 2017, comprising 180 chapters and 5 bonus episodes. The novel follows two protagonists working together to solve a series of five interconnected murder cases in the city of Yancheng.
✨ Introduction
A young man’s body is found outside a glitzy high-rise on the West Side of Yancheng—dressed for celebration, strangled, and left with a sheet of paper covering his face. One word is scrawled across it: money.
To Sergeant Luo Wenzhou, head of the Criminal Investigation Team at the Yancheng Municipal Public Safety Bureau, it’s just another case in a city rife with power plays and buried secrets. But as he digs deeper with his team, what begins as a straightforward homicide unravels into something far murkier—reaching into the city’s darkest corners of wealth, privilege, and police corruption.
And then there’s Fei Du: the aloof, razor-sharp CEO of the Fei Corporation, who seems to know far too much about the murder—and about Luo Wenzhou himself. Once a troubled youth with ties to Luo’s past, Fei Du now walks a fine line between brilliant ally and inscrutable suspect. His insights are disturbingly precise. His motives? Frustratingly opaque.
As the investigation twists through layers of trauma and moral ambiguity, Luo Wenzhou finds himself reluctantly drawn toward the very man who unsettles him most. But in a city where justice is easily bought and truth wears many masks, can either man afford to trust the other?
🌏 Background
The main body of Silent Reading consists of four criminal cases and a grand finale. These cases interweave with one another, revealing the tragic fates and complex humanity of various characters, thereby constructing an intricate narrative network. The novel involves more than 70 characters, whose relationships are densely interconnected. The romantic storyline, which happens to center on two diametrically opposed protagonists, remains tightly intertwined with the criminal investigation plotline throughout.
The narrative characteristics of Silent Reading are primarily manifested in its "classic literature + case" structural framework . The author selects five literary masterpieces as chapter titles—The Red and the Black, Lolita, Macbeth, Demons (also known as The Possessed or The Devils), and The Count of Monte Cristo—using their protagonists as thematic anchors for different stories. Around a unified central theme, these references are meticulously crafted to shape vivid, dynamic character portrayals. Meanwhile, sentences from these works are interspersed throughout, creating a mutually resonant expressive effect. The major antagonist organization "The Reciters" corresponds to the renowned German novel The Reader, while the title Silent Reading itself implies the distinction between the protagonists and "The Reciters"—reading aloud disturbs those nearby, whereas silent reading does not; similarly, while upholding justice, the protagonists never violate laws or harm the innocent. Additionally, the text frequently incorporates allusions to other classic literature, such as The Old Man and the Sea and Recollections of West Hunan, which fit seamlessly and naturally with the surrounding plot context.
Silent Reading inherits the characteristic of "direct reflection of reality" from traditional literature while employing a "slow introduction" narrative pace and a relatively complex story structure. The author uses the two male protagonists working together to solve cases as the main plotline, using these cases to bring forth a series of social hot-button issues, including corruption within the judicial system, child abduction and sexual abuse, powerful families engaging in organized crime with contempt for the law, and school bullying phenomena—almost every issue capable of sparking widespread attention in real society. Moreover, this "slow introduction" narrative rhythm does not hinder the tension created by certain involved plot elements; the investigation progresses smoothly. Each case itself often conceals complex processes and convoluted truths beneath its surface, with intricate connections existing between the crimes.
Thematic elements represent inheritance in terms of content. Direct reflection of reality represents inheritance in terms of conceptual approach. Narrative rhythm and story structure represent inheritance in terms of writing technique. It is from these three aspects that Silent Reading draws upon the resources of traditional literature.
