Tang Junhe was five when he first became Yang Xuan's little shadow; at seventeen, their parents' marriage made them stepbrothers under one roof; and at twenty-eight and twenty-nine, after years of separation, they meet again. Across three acts — childhood, one incandescent and ruinous adolescence, and an adult reunion — the novel asks what survives when family, scandal, and time have all taken their cut. Its most famous line holds the answer: "Two people in the same darkness can never be each other's light. So walk together, and find the light together."
