An Omega whose mutated pheromones repel every Alpha retreats into his old online game for comfort — and the account he buys comes with a famous in-game husband, a guild full of secrets, and an identity thief wearing his old name.
Chinese Title: 信息素变异
Pinyin: Xìn Xī Sù Biàn Yì
Common English Title: Mutated Pheromones (NovelUpdates standard)
❤️ Main Relationship
姜萧 (Jiang Xiao) × 越然 (Yue Ran)
✨ Introduction
Xin Xi Su Bian Yi is what happens when a "small sweet cake" grows a plot engine. Yue Ran finishes the national college entrance exam dreaming of a campus romance, and instead gets a lab result: his pheromones have mutated. Every Alpha who catches his scent is hardwired to recoil — the more an Alpha is drawn to him, the more violently he is rejected. Healthy, untreatable, and statistically cursed, Yue Ran shrugs, decides a Beta will do fine someday, and logs back into the MMORPG he quit three years ago to soothe his wounded pride.
The account his cousin buys for him is a couple account — complete with a maxed-out "husband" in the server's most powerful guild, whose guildmaster Jiang Xiao is the coldest, most respected player on the server. To make things worse, an impostor is parading around under Yue Ran's old legendary ID, and the whole server is watching the drama. What Yue Ran cannot know: among all the Alphas his scent would drive away, one man's brain simply does not process pheromones the usual way — and Jiang Xiao has never needed biology's permission to be drawn to him.
🌏 Background
The novel runs a double map: a near-future ABO everyday life where second genders shape dating, medicine, and quiet heartbreak; and a classic Chinese MMORPG of guilds, couple systems, world bosses, and channel gossip. Roughly two-thirds of the book lives inside the game, where masked identities multiply — bought accounts, borrowed alt accounts, impostors, and one guildmaster quietly maintaining an absurd couple charade for reasons even he declines to examine. The game's court of public opinion becomes the novel's Greek chorus: shipping, suspecting, and eventually defending the pair at the center of every scandal.
🎭 Themes & Tone
- A mutation as metaphor: difference, acceptance, and loving beyond hardwired preference
- Online identity as both armor and trap — half the cast is someone else
- Guild found-family and the comedy of internet politics
- A love that routes around biology: compatibility as a puzzle, not a verdict
- Bright, bantering leads who talk past each other beautifully
Tone: fizzy gaming comedy over a soft, sincere center; conflict dissolves into sweetness almost as fast as it forms.
👥 Main Characters
- 姜萧 (Jiang Xiao) — the guildmaster: cool-headed, principled, terrifying in guild wars, and immune to the one thing that should have kept him away
- 越然 (Yue Ran) — the mutant Omega: sharp-tongued, proud, game-savvy, and much better at retaliation than at being pitied
- 秦修杰 (Qin Xiujie) — Yue Ran's cousin, matchmaker by accident and chaos agent by profession
- The guild crew — a wall of gossip, loyalty, and unsolicited relationship advice
🔥 Why It’s Popular
- A genuinely fresh ABO premise: the shou's biology is the obstacle, not the fuel, and the resolution is clever rather than magical
- The MMO half is written by someone who clearly loves MMOs — couple systems, guild drama, alt accounts, all weaponized for comedy
- The slow unmasking of every character's double identity is the book's page-turning engine
- Yue Ran is a beloved take-no-prisoners shou who never whines about his mutation — he prices it, then plays around it
- Yi Shi Hua Shang's signature: dense banter, warm ensemble, and zero wasted angst
